The Advisory and Final Selection Team for the "Cipta Media Bersama" grants, consisting of nine members of experts from various backgrounds, has approved 20 applications to share a USD 1 million grant (equivalent to Rp. 8.5 billion). The open grants for the improvement of the media, funded by the Ford Foundation and supported by three non-profit groups (Wikimedia Indonesia, ICT Watch and the Indonesian Independent Journalists Alliance) received 820 applications from throughout Indonesia. During the initial selection stage, the committee and the general public chose 35 candidates, with the committee choosing 30 and the general public choosing another 5 via the Cipta Media website and social media. This grant is hoped to empower society and improve its capacity in contributing to media diversity, defending freedom of expression, protecting media ethics, guarantee fair and equitable access to the media, and actively oversee the content, ownership, and procedures of the mainstream media. David Hulse, the Country Representative for Indonesia from the Ford Foundation, stated that the Cipta Media Bersama grant program proved that the media sector in Indonesia is quickly undergoing major changes as a result of the advent of new technology; it is hoped that this new technology can be used to make a change for the better. Nia Dinata, a member of the Advisory and Final Selection Team, opined that initiatives such as Cipta Media Bersama were necessary as Indonesia desperately needs alternative content. Technology expert Onno Purbo stated that Cipta Media was an effort to "give voice to those who have none." Of the 20 recipients, half are from Jakarta (with the work areas being within and without Jakarta), while the others came from Sumatra (3), Java (4) , Kalimantan (1), Sulawesi (1), and Papua (1). All recipients will have their development monitored, including the use of funds, and the results will be licensed Creative Commons 3.0, meaning that the results and methods can be used freely by the public. Next year, Cipta Media Bersama will run media and technology training workshops to improve the general public's capabilities before running another grant program in 2013.
