Development of software for Wikimedia Article Creation
  1. Preparation of source data
  2. Development of Wikipedia article creation software
  3. Wikipedia Community Consultation
  4. Development of Wikipedia toolkit in lndonesian language
  1. OSM: Yantisa Akhadi
  2. WMID: John Vandenberg, Siska Doviana, Ivonne Kristiani
  • OSM Data is available as an input for Wikimedia source data
  • Wikimedia article creation software tested and ready to be deployed
  • Initial communication with volunteer coordination established
Result
  • Several alternatives to acquire OSM data have been discussed since September
  • The script have been tested and working, yet minor modification to OSM data is required to ensure that the articles have higher credibility and did not deleted by Wikipedia editor
  • Arief Rahman (resides in Kalimantan) as volunteer coordination for Samarinda was invited to come to Jakarta on 21 October 2014 to be trained for 1 month. The training includes OSM mapping, OSM field paper, government relation, financial and narrative reporting using Wikimedia Indonesia standard, learning how to operate Pywikibot, and data collection.
  • On December 9, 2014, a preliminary meeting with Yanuar Wijaya, one of the founder of Wikimedia Indonesia who resides in Samarinda, was established. Yanuar offered two things for the project:
  1. Meeting with provincial level government in Samarinda to support the project
  2. His interest in developing Open Sea Map for Kalimantan

Wikimedia Indonesia and OSM agreed to do both.

  • Also happening in December is OSM meeting with Mongabay, one of the NGO with national reputation specialized in nature and conservation with offices located in Jakarta and Samarinda. The result of this meeting is Mongabay in principal is supporting the effort but they don't have the resources available this year to commit to this project on organizational level. However, they will let their network of journalists in Kalimantan know about this project and will pass on the information. Unfortunately there is no confirmation from Mongabay about it and no information about local Mongabay contact person in Kalimantan have been passed through to Yantisa or Siska.

Draft 1 and 2 tested to local partners
  • Software drafts tested with local partners
  1. OSM: Yantisa Akhadi
  2. WMID: John Vandenberg, Arief Rahman
  • Four universities approx. 12 students total (three persons/ universities) have access to DRAFT toolkit and give feedback to WMID & HOT OSM (gender and age disaggregated data collected)
Result
  • In January, both OSM and WMID have problems in communicating with the universities in Samarinda. We decided that the first visit is not to do training, but to initiate contact in person with the university and the local government (provincial level) in Samarinda.
  • WMID and OSM representative have a meeting with government officials in Samarinda. Unfortunately, the governor is ill and the delegate designated by the governor would like us to do official proposal and have a follow up meeting after the proposal with the governor.

Consolidation of Combined Training Toolkit in Wikipedia and OpenStreetMap.
  • Final toolkit consolidated and ready to deploy
  1. OSM: Yantisa Akhadi
  2. WMID: John Vandenberg, Arief Rahman
  • Four universities approx. 12 students total (three persons/ universities) have access to DRAFT toolkit and give feedback to WMID & HOT OSM (gender and age disaggregated data collected)
Result
  • WMID and OSM representative also visit three universities in Samarinda with a very positive result. One of the university (STIMK SPB Airlangga) has even already arranged a training to be run. Unfortunately, halfway during the most important part of the training the power went off, so we have a talk instead of on-hand training. The second University (Politeknik Negeri Samarinda) decided to sign an MoU for the training. The third university (Universitas Mulawarman) is very keen to have the cooperation and even potential to do a server and research in the university.

  • 1 Wikipedia workshops held with 2 local partners
  • l OpenStreetMap workshop held with 3 local partners

Workshop minutes documented

TBD
Extent to which local partners (and possibly related government agencies) show interest and engage in process

Result
  • In February trainer Vanessa Winona and Harry Mahardhika fly to Samarinda to do Wikipedia and OSM training. OSM is using the new manual and tested it to the student, however Wikimedia Indonesia is using slides developed for beginner to manually edit Wikipedia. Both Wikimedia and OSM decided that this training should be held in neutral ground, since the attendees are coming from three different universities.
  • Wikimedia conducts a 2-day training (16-17 February 2015) while OSM conducts a 3-day training (16-18 February 2015). Wikimedia training materials include introduction to Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia, steps to contribute in Wikipedia, and the ground rules in contributing to Wikipedia, and OSM training materials include the introduction to OSM and its site, tools used in OSM site, direct survey to collect data, and steps to input raw data into OSM site. Overall, the participants are active in following the training and showing great interest. The major problem in conducting the training is the limited access to internet.
  • The previous training venue is government facility being offered to us in January, but since the official of the venue can not confirm until the last minute, we are forced to move the venue to the hotel meeting room which charges participant per head.
  • After the training, the contributors for Wikipedia is monitored closely. Monitoring for participant happened during February up until the end of April 2015.
  • Reasoning for Wikpedia manual in Indonesian is not done is because there are so complicated and too many things to explain that hasn't been captured in anywhere else. The English manual (1) & (2) is different, because all language Wikipedias are independent with their own customization. The writer for the manual is overwhelmed with so many things to create from scratch, not to mention in making them easily understood in graphics. The problem eventually cost an increase in WMID budget for graphic designer and push backward the deployment date for Wikipedia manual.
