There are 19 people who signed bylaws and also the founder of Wikimedia Indonesia. All of the founders of Wikimedia Indonesia is a Wikipedian, contributors at Wikipedia Bahasa Indonesia (WBI). There is an administrator and there is also a regular user of WBI. Nevertheless, WMID is not under the WBI. WBI remains as an independent community. Focus between WMID and WBI are different because WMID more focused on luring activities (offline) while the WBI in online activities (online).
All of the nineteen founders raise funds for the initial capital used to prepare the organization and others. For further activities, funds are expected to get donations from business organizations and donors.
Business organizations focus on two things, namely (1) the collection and dissemination of knowledge and (2) empowerment of the contributors to the material knowledge. To be able to conduct business, the organization must also establish cooperation with relevant stakeholders as well as managing the financial organization to fund all its activities.
In the short term the first or second years, activities will be focus on dissemination activities and cultivation of cooperation with the agency or institution which has a similar vision as Depkominfo, Ministry of Education, as well as educational institutions. Copyright law of open source in Indonesia will also be encouraged to be more tangible such as by efforts to implement the copyrighted works (Creative Commons) in Indonesia. The long-term, the spread of knowledge will be made to reach a broader Indonesian community that have not been able to access the internet such as with print media and other media that allows.
Creative Commons (CC) is a charitable and educational organization founded in 2001, based in Massachusetts, United States. The headquartered is located San Francisco, USA.
CC offers a licensing model called copyright works, Indonesia's version for Creative Commons, which became a bridge between the concept of copyright which applied in a rigid (strict implementation) with the concept of free license copyrighted works. CC licenses give a choice of “some rights reserved”. This makes the creator may retain the rights to copyright works while still encouraging the use of these copyrighted works within certain limits by the public.
Until now, the CC licensing model has been implemented in 50 countries worldwide. Several other countries are pioneering the application of CC licensing model in their countries, including Indonesia.
Wikimedia Indonesia is an affiliate institution of CC International in Indonesia, in developing the concept of CC licensing in Indonesia.
CC licensing is one model of license agreement. In accordance with the provisions of Article 1338 in Book of Civil Law Act, all arrangements made legally are binding for the parties who made them. According to Article 1320, condition of validity of a treaty is there is agreement, the parties, a certain thing, and permitted or legal. So, as they meet legal conditions of the agreement, the CC licensing model can be applied in Indonesia.
CC licensing does not replace the concept of copyrights. CC licenses still acknowledge that in copyright contained an creator's rights to declare and reproduce a copyright works. CC License only helps creator to express what rights will be retained by him, and what rights are granted to the public. With it, the creators provide broader access to the public to develop their works into something more useful for the common welfare.
Statement of the creator is manifested in the symbols that are easily understood and applicable in countries which have adopted CC licensing model. In essence, the symbols consist of four types, namely attribution (by), sharing a similar (sa), without derivatives (nd), and non-commercial (nc). In practice, the symbols are used in various combinations according to the will of the creators of copyrighted works.
