- Hacking the barriers - diversity in the media
- Just and equitable access to media technologies
- Media freedom and online ethics
- Media monitoring
The application categories are accompanied by key strategies and approaches that may be employed in project proposals, which include: local content, technology, action, monitoring, mediation, and creative strategies.
The four application categories address particular needs within the Indonesian media environment which were designed to get people thinking and talking about these issues and how they can make a difference to improve issues of media rights and access in Indonesia. 3. Indonesian Media Current Issues
Indonesian Journalists Alliance, Wikimedia Indonesia, ICT Watch, and the Ford Foundation believes that a change towards social justice is not easy and the media can be a driving force to contribute actively as partners for individuals or groups that strive and work in this issue.
Yet access for this agents of change to the media, for various reason, can prove to be difficult, and in certain some cases, expensive. A study to media trends reveals that the press love to cover individual stories who is successful in their endeavor by taking risks, answers to the opportunities, diligent, and hardworking. However, stories which emphasis on large scale success resulting from a good policy born from a certain institution or a joint success based on openly accountable performance to the public - are rarely reported.
Media coverage is dominated by for profit based companies or feed an "emotional" news stories of a specific individual about grief, pleasure, emotional debate, and fear. The problem with emotional stories coverage is the plot is automatically "broken" since it is failed to associate one problem with another that links to a bigger picture, which is system improvement.
Television as a successful medium that ables to reach out and become a reference to 93 percent of Indonesian viewers, more often than not caught selling "emotions" resulting TV audience to respond to real social problems as a "victim of circumstance" and the problem will go away by itself if they "try hard".
This situation is worrisome since by this systematical approach, Indonesian media, whether they realize it or not are making their audience paralyzed to see that as citizen it is also their responsibility and their right to actively participate in improving the situation.
A media that provide useful information, encouragement, and guidance for the citizens, will enable it consumers to see loose knots that they can fix, it will give people the courage to fix things, and ultimately contribute to improves an equal opportunity for a better system to suppor social justice cause.
